Do your jeans smell funny?  Not everyone can smell chemicals in jeans.  For chlorine/chemical scents, we recommend soaking and washing.  If your nose pulls a more mildew or metallic taste in your mouth that is overwhelming then you may wish to send them back (with the tags on) because you will likely always smell something on the jeans.
